What to check before you pick
Every device you write on
The most common regret is an app that doesn't exist on your other computer or your phone. Check the Platforms rows first.
Where the text needs to land
Installed apps type into any program. Browser and built-in tools are free but you'll paste the text, or stay inside one app.
Cloud or local
Cloud recognition needs a connection. Local models keep audio on your machine but want a recent computer with plenty of memory.
Live dictation or recordings
If you also transcribe saved audio, only some apps take files. Most dictation-first apps don't.
How the price grows

Of the apps here, Voicy has a Linux app, and Dictaro and Google Docs voice typing work in Chrome or Edge on Linux.
Which dictation apps work offline?
Superwhisper runs locally by default, Dragon Professional runs on your PC, and Voicy has an optional offline mode on desktop. Apple Dictation works offline for some languages and devices. Wispr Flow, Windows voice typing, Google Docs voice typing and Dictaro need a connection.
Are there free dictation apps?
Apple Dictation, Windows voice typing and Google Docs voice typing are free and built in. Dictaro has a 30-minute free trial. Wispr Flow and Superwhisper have free plans with limits, and Voicy offers a 30-minute trial.
